"A Proverbs 31 Woman"
Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far above rubies. The heart of her husband safely trusts her; so he will have no lack of gain. She does him good and not evil all the days of her life. ... She extends her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy. ... Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come. She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness. She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: "Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all." Charm is deceitful and beauty is passing, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates. - Proverbs 31:10-12, 20, 25-31
Do not let your adornment be merely outward--arranging the hair, wearing gold, or putting on fine apparel--rather let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the incorruptible beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is very precious in the sight of God. - 1 Peter 3:3-4
In some ways, I am a little leery of writing an article about women since...well...since I am not one. But I believe God has given me some important things that I need to share with women. I strongly feel that nearly all women in our society are not completely living as God desires. Some are more astray than others, but in my opinion, it is rare to see a woman who is following all of these verses. I believe that the most godly type of woman uses no make-up, no perfume, and wears clothes that do not draw attention to any part of her body. Now, can you be a good, godly woman while not following those principles? Of course, and many women do fall into that category. But, I still believe that the most godly type of woman does follow those guidelines, and I will explain why below.
If you use make-up, perfume, unnecessary hair products, or in any way do extra things to "enhance" your appearance...
...you are telling God that He didn't do a good enough job with His creation. God created each one of us in His image, and each in a unique and special way. If you don't like something about your looks and do things that you feel will improve it, in my opinion it's no different than saying, "God, You did an okay job when You made me, but You could have done better in some areas, so I will work on those areas myself."
...you are spending time on yourself that you could be spending with God or helping others. I cannot fathom how some women and girls spend hours in the bathroom, but my understanding of that is not what's important here. Can you imagine what all you could do with that extra time, even if for you it's more like 15 or 30 minutes a day? That time adds up and God could do some amazing things with it, a lot like the amount of time both men and women spend watching TV. Instead, you are spending all that time on yourself.
...you are drawing attention to yourself instead of drawing attention to God. This last point can include anything from make-up and perfume to wearing provocative and/or revealing clothing, which is sadly becoming more and more commonplace in our society. Hopefully, you do not dress that way. But if you do, whether or not it is intentional, you are attempting to draw attention to yourself. Instead, I believe women should dress more conservatively. When I see a woman dressed conservatively, it directs my mind toward God because I think, "looking at how she's dressed, she is probably a very godly woman!" Don't you want to help bring people's minds toward God by the way you dress rather than being responsible for possibly sending their minds in the exact opposite direction?
Because I'm not a woman, I will never fully understand what it is like to be one. However, I am a follower of Christ, and I do understand the principles He has given us in the Bible. Everything we do in our lives should be done to glorify God, not ourselves and our own bodies. If you are a woman who does some of the things I have mentioned, I hope you will think more deeply about the ideas I have presented in the future.
